Praying for our children is one of the biggest blessings in motherhood. To be able to bring our children to the Lord in prayer is a special opportunity to seek the Lord, and to intercede on their behalf.
I have prayed for my children daily since before the birth of our first baby almost 10 years ago. My words have changed a few times over the years, but I still pray aloud over them each night.
In addition to that, I pray for them in other ways throughout the day and in my own personal prayer time. I really love using Scripture-based prayers for them, and I love teaching my children how to pray as well.
If you’re looking for inspiration on how to pray for your children, here are some of the prayers that I pray over my own regularly.
Prayers for Your Children
Pin this for later…

Let It Begin With Me
Yes, one way that I pray for my children is by praying for myself. That they would see Jesus in me. That God would let the fruit of the Spirit show in my daily interactions with them. That God would give me His eyes for them. His Heart for them.

A Real Relationship
I pray that they would come to know the Lord in a real and powerful way.
That they would follow the Lord with all that they are, all the days of their lives.
Jesus says that some will be told “depart from me, I knew you not.”
My desire is that my children would know and be known by the Lord. That one day they will be told “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Matthew 25:23 niv
Teachable Moments
Life can present many opportunities for learning.
I pray that the Lord would open my eyes to the opportunities He gives me each day, and give me words to say to make the most of those opportunities with my children. Always being ready with an answer for my faith.
That these teachable moments would stick with them and they would be reminded of them when they see the everyday things that inspire them.
Prayers for Boldness
That my children would have the boldness of Paul and the disciples. Not hindered by what others may think of them, proclaiming the Gospel boldly.
Prayers for Integrity
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Jochebed, the Hebrew Midwives from Exodus, the disciples, and the apostles are all examples of people who honored God despite the threat to their physical lives. Not fearing a man who can kill the body.
We know that things in this world can always be somewhat dangerous for Christ followers, and we are told to expect suffering. I pray that they will do right, no matter the cost.
Prayers for Love
That they would be known by their love.
That the Lord would give them His agape love for others.
That they would be able to substitute their name for love in these verses:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
Prayers for Joy
That the joy of the Lord would truly be their strength. That no matter what they are going through, that they can have Joy because they know that they are the Lord’s.
That they would not lose the joy of their salvation.
Prayers for Peace
I pray that my children would seek the Lord’s peace, which surpasses all understanding.
This world has plenty of troubles, but being able to rest in the peace of the Lord, no matter the storms ranging around us, is invaluable.
The Peace that the Lord gives is truly beyond our human understanding.
Prayers for Patience
Patiences is a virtue that is slowly being eaten away in our convenience driven world.
I pray that they would remember to slow down and bear with those who need extra love and patience. That they would not rush through life, but enjoy all the everyday little things.
Prayers for Kindness
Kindness is another thing that is hard to come by these days.
I pray that my children will be kind to those around them. Especially to those who need it most and they usually receive it least.

That they would have the faith of Abraham. Even if they don’t see the next step, that they would be willing to step out in faith.
Prayers for Gentleness
I am a mom with four boys, yet I pray that they, like my daughter, would be known by all for their gentleness.
In the church, this is often spoken of for women and girls, but in Scripture, it is most often spoken of in addressing all believers.
Prayers for Self-Control
In an indulgent world, I pray that they would walk by the spirit and not by their fleshly desires.
That they would pray and think before acting.

I pray that they would put on the full armor of God, being ready for spiritual warfare. That they would be prepared for the attacks of the enemy and well equipped to handle it.
Prayers for Compassion
That my children would be compassionate in this hurting world has always been a prayer of mine. That they would see others as God does. That they would be the hands and feet of Jesus.
That they would bear burdens with their brothers and sisters in the Lord.

The Body
I often pray that the Lord would use them in the body of Christ, best using the talents He has given them. That they would realize that they cannot do it all.
Prayers for Strength
I pray that they would not rely on their strength, but boast in their weakness for it is then that He is strong. That they would step out in faith and allow the Lord to work through them if He is calling them-even if they feel out of their depth.
