The Greatest Opportunity

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

—John 3:16-17 NIV

They say it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know.

This can be good news if you’re well-connected, but bad news if you only have an excellent resume that’s not supported by relationships with people who are doing what you want to do.

Perhaps nobody understands this concept better than a college graduate who is actively searching for their first job and hoping to build a successful career doing what they studied in school, or perhaps they’re just trying to land any job to pay the bills.

No matter what the case may be, oftentimes it’s not about your education, talent or skill set; it’s about the relationships you do or don’t have with the people who know people inside the organizations where you’re applying to work.

Alli Worthington said, “Our opportunities come through relationships.” When you have the right people behind you, you can go far in this life.

But did you know that there is hope for all of us who believe in God? He created every human. He knows everyone on this planet. He can make a way for you to work anywhere. Yet, God offers you more than your heart’s desires; He offers you a free gift through His Son (Jesus Christ) that’s the greatest opportunity you can ever receive.

Today, I want to encourage your heart with the good news of a Savior who freely gives the greatest opportunity of all: Going to Heaven to live in perfection for eternity in God’s Presence.

This opportunity only comes through having a relationship with God’s Son, Jesus Christ (our Savior). And the good news about that truth is that God has already made a way for you to know His Son (John 3:16). Jesus stands at the door of your heart, gently knocking and waiting for you to let Him in (Revelation 3:20). When you let Him in, He can change your life forever!

The Bible says when we draw near to God, He draws near to us (James 4:8). This, along with Bible study and prayer, is how we can establish a relationship with our Savior.

The Bible also tells us to delight in the Lord (Psalm 37:4) then He will give us the desires of our heart. I’ve learned that sometimes, what our heart really wants isn’t what we thought we wanted.

In my career journey thus far, God has taken me on several detours toward my destination and while I haven’t fully arrived yet, I have realized that He’s enriched my life by blessing me with those detours in different careers.

I learned so much about life and people and God’s character through it all. Those professional experiences made me a better person. It also helped me understand different mindsets, cultures, personalities and backgrounds. Ultimately, it made me a better person and more compassionate humanitarian.

While I have not yet landed my dream job in a capacity that pays me my worth, God has blessed me to live out many of my dreams over the years: Working as a journalist for a few newspapers and magazines, becoming an author of sweet romance stories and devotional books, making an impact for the future by teaching young children, improving my people skills while serving customers in seasonal retail jobs, as well as writing and recording audio of my devotions for publication online via Crosswalk’s official website and Life Audio podcast.

I’ve deeply appreciated all these opportunities that God has given me. But I realize that the greatest opportunity I’ll ever have is accepting Christ’s free gift of salvation and following Him all the way to Heaven.

Living with God for all eternity in Heaven and on the Earth made new is the best gift humankind can receive.

We won’t only be surrounded by perfection; we’ll be perfect! Our bodies will be immortal and free of disease. We’ll have optimal health for the rest of our lives. And we won’t have to plan any funerals because death will never be part of our experience again!

We’ll be reunited with loved ones who died before us. And we’ll be able to experience all the wonderful things God had planned for us before sin entered the picture. All of this comes from knowing Jesus on a personal level.

Yes, it’s important to have a good job that pays the bills and helps you survive and thrive in this life on Earth. But if you’re struggling in that area, I advise you to take time to talk to Jesus about it. He knows what you need.

Trust Him to connect you with the right people at the right time who will give you gainful employment. And if you do land your dream job, always remember God. Keep Him first.

Because our stories don’t end here on Earth. We have all eternity to look forward to when we know God. May we always cultivate our relationship with our Savior and keep Him first not only in our job search but in every area of our life.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceedingabundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” - Ephesians 3:20-21 KJV
