Talisman Truth in the Land of Tea Leaves

“Go with me to have my tea leaves read.”

This was the request of an acquaintance some time back, and it was not the first time I had been asked to do something like that.

I’ve been invited to “pray” over stones, enter a medium’s tent, have my palm read, chant, and have the detritus of my tea cup analyzed.

Be assured, none of those invitations will be forthcoming from the same individuals again.

Our beloved non-believer friends are looking for answers in all the wrong places and opening themselves up to, at best, confusion, and, at worst, demonic influence.

Christian people too are sometimes lured into thinking these new age things are harmless “fun” diversions meant simply to entertain.

Doubtless you can find a psychic on a corner near you, or you have seen one advertised as you watch an old movie; perhaps you have accompanied someone into a psychic’s tent at the fair or participated in a charitable event where palm reading was offered.

Whether it is tea leaves, horoscopes, palm readings, psychic call-in numbers, astrologers or mystics, these things are not of God, but are of the father of lies, Satan.

We know from Luke 10:18 that Jesus watched Satan fall from heaven, and that the reason that he fell was because of Satan’s desire to be like God (Isaiah 14:12-17).

Satan started as an angel of light, and he can still appear that way. Let’s not be fooled by the Hollywood version of hooves and a red suit, but rather be wise to the wiles of the devil, knowing that all of these diversions are just that, diversions to take people away from the truth of God and His Word.

Recall the verse in Revelation 12:4 where one-third of the angels left heaven with Lucifer to roam the earth. If he could convince one-third of all the angels to go with him, he can certainly convince a lot of people of the “innocence” of a Ouija board or the harmlessness of a tarot card.

Consider this; that those fallen angels, now demons, have not gone anywhere – they’ve remained right here among us.

Paul said that we battle not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities and rulers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12).

Is it any wonder that psychics believe they can communicate with spirit beings? I don’t doubt that they are receiving communications from spirits, but what kind of spirit? Those fallen angels, now demons, have been here a long time and know a lot of things – histories, families, family trees.

It doesn’t take much imagination to understand how a psychic could know your uncle wore red socks and sang in his sleep!

The only truth in communication is found through Jesus.

God’s Word has supplied us with all of the answer to life’s questions and all of the information we need to get through this life and into the next one with Him.

Let us put aside all of the hindrances, encumbrances, and pitfalls that keep our unbelieving friends and relatives, and sometimes ourselves too, from pursuing Christ and Christ alone.
