Finding Fellowship in the Midst of Hopelessness
I don’t watch much TV, but when I do, it’s either a cozy Christmas movie (you know the kind—the ones where the entire plot is revealed within the first few minutes?) or an intense crime drama. There’s no in-between. I either watch to completely relax or I’m sitting on the edge of my seat.
Recently, while watching a crime show, I heard the word “marauder” for the first time. From the context, I was able to piece together its meaning. Imagine my surprise when the same word came up in my Bible reading a few days later:
“Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel…” (Judges 6:3 NLT).
I was no longer satisfied with just relying on context clues; I needed to know the exact definition. So I looked it up:
Marauder (n.): A person who roams from place to place looking for people to kill or things to steal or destroy.
Whoa. Does that sound familiar?
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10 NLT).
The Marauders
In Judges 6, we read how the marauding Midianites were so oppressive that the Israelites hid in mountains and caves. Whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites destroyed them, leaving the Israelites with nothing to eat. They stole the livestock and ravaged the land, reducing the people to starvation.
Times were tough, and hearts were hopeless.
The Man
This is when we first meet Gideon, who would become the greatest judge of Israel. But at this point, he was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide the grain from the marauders. Then, the angel of the Lord appeared and spoke the unexpected: “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”
The Mistake
Gideon’s response was understandable. He asked, “If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?”
We, as readers, have the advantage of knowing the whole story. We understand the spiritual decline that led to Israel’s suffering. But when we face our own dark and difficult days, don’t we often find ourselves asking the same questions? “Why is this happening, Lord? Are You still with me?”
Yet, the Bible reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways, His thoughts beyond our understanding. Even in the darkest times, God is still working. He has a plan that surpasses the chaos, just as He did with Gideon—and just as He does with us.
The Messiah
This reminds me of David’s words in Psalm 23:
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:5 NIV).
In Scripture, the table is a symbol of fellowship, hospitality, and abundance. Just as Gideon was assured of God’s presence despite the marauders, we too are assured of His presence in our darkest moments.
Jesus, our Messiah, calls us into fellowship with Him even when we’re surrounded by chaos, loss, and hopelessness. He invites us to find an abundant, rich, and satisfying life in the heart of our most difficult times.
The Mission
This has always been His mission. Time and again in Scripture, we see God seeking after humanity in their lowest moments.
1. When Adam and Eve were overwhelmed with shame, God sought them out (Genesis 3:8-9).
2. When Hagar felt unloved and mistreated, God found her (Genesis 16:7-13).
3. When Jonah was consumed with regret, the Lord gave him a second chance (Jonah 3:1-2).
The Response
Just as the invitation to fellowship was extended to Gideon, Adam and Eve, Hagar, and Jonah, it is extended to us as well.
Whether you feel lost in sin, despair, darkness, or hopelessness, the Good News is this: Jesus came for you. And He continues to call you.
He invites you to sit at His table, even in the midst of your enemies and trials. He longs to fill you with the abundance of His hope when your own hope seems depleted. When you are surrounded by darkness, He assures you—He is there.
Take heart, dear friend. His table is set for you, even now, in the midst of your struggle. The enemy may be prowling, seeking to steal your joy and hope, but Jesus offers you something far greater: fellowship, peace, and abundance in Him.
Will you sit at the table He has prepared for you, even while the battle rages? Will you trust His invitation to rest in Him when everything else seems uncertain?
Today, choose to come to the table. Bow before the King who sees you, even in your weakest moments, and ask Him to fill you with the abundance only He can offer. He longs to meet you right where you are.
