God’s Love in Creation: A Reflection on “The Maker” by Chris August
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.”
—Psalm 19:1-4 NIV
Did you know that the Creator (God) of the entire Universe loves you with all of His Heart? God is our Maker and we are His Masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
It amazes me that the same God who lovingly made humankind, also created the beauty that surrounds us in our world and beyond. Reflecting on God’s goodness and His creation reminds me of a song by Chris August titled “The Maker.”
Song lyrics for “The Maker” speak of how we can see God in the sunrise, in the rain, in times that cause laughter and when we are in pain.
Every creation brought forth by God is beautiful because He made it and God has great creative taste.
It humbles the singer (August) to see that the Maker of this breathtaking creation would also think of us.
Yet, God made all of this with humankind in mind because He knew we would not only love it; we would need it.
In this song, August says how taking in all of God’s creation makes him feel alive and sense a deep appreciation of God’s undying love for humankind.
God’s great adoration for us makes August feel like he could overcome all odds in life and accomplish anything such as climbing mountains – a thousand – at once.
God’s magnificent creation that surrounds us here on Earth shows us how much our Maker loves us. And this love is not one-sided; it is reciprocal because God loves us just as much, if not more, than we love Him.
Let’s pause there.
How many of us grew up feeling unloved or experienced the sting of rejection from someone we loved?
Unrequited love weighs heavy on the human heart.
But when that happens, we need to remember that the Maker of Heaven and Earth loved us before we were born and He will continue to love us throughout eternity!
God’s love for us is perfect, pure and unconditional.
While people who we care about might stop loving us, our Creator never will.
He will always be there for us, no matter what. Think about that for a moment: God who created all the worlds and the inhabitants within, loves us forever and will never give up on us.
Plus, He has our best interest at heart. This is a win-win situation!
August goes on to sing about how he sees God in all creation and senses His Majesty.
He says that the entire universe sings to the glory of God. August is in awe that this great God lives on the inside of every believer.
Now let’s marinate in that Biblical fact: The One who created us, the Almighty God who is King of kings and Lords of lords, lives inside of us (Romans 8:11).
Our greatest resource resides in our hearts, if we let Him. Have you asked Jesus Christ to live in your heart? If you have, ponder how comforting it is to know that He who loves you endlessly, resides in you.
As a writer, I relate to the lyric that says God is more than words written on a page. The Bible truly is the Living Word of God.
Unlike any other book, the Bible comes alive when you read it (Hebrews 4:12).
This is one of the reasons why we should prayerfully read God’s Word every day. We need to feed our God-given spirit with His words of hope and life, especially in when many tragic and unnerving events that happen in our world can make us feel hopeless.
Bible study reminds us of the bigger picture: God is in control and Jesus Christ will rescue us (Revelation 1:7).
As a follower of Jesus Christ, I appreciate the lyric that reminds me that the Hands of Jesus Christ who made all creation, stretched out on a cross and gave up His life for us so we might have eternal life (John 3:16).
Gratefully, Jesus didn’t stay dead in the grave. After three days, He rose again and now lives forever.
Christ is our High Priest and the Bridge between mankind and our Maker. It comforts my heart to know that He always is here for us and His love for us is everlasting and thanks to His sacrifice on the cross, we have hope of eternal life when we follow Him.
August closes out “The Maker” song reminding us that if we ever think nobody love us, remember our Maker who loves us eternally.
This brings me peace because we as mere mortals can be fickle: one day we love you the next day we don’t.
But God’s love for all of us is steadfast and He never changes. And that is a beautiful truth that we should always remember and rest on.
