You know how sometimes God gives us a nudge we weren’t planning for? Like, when you’re giving 110% to everyone and everything around you – your family, your job, the group chat that’s somehow still on read, and suddenly you realize the one person you haven’t been showing up for… is you?

I promise I’m not writing this post for myself.

Or.. maybe I am.

But, that’s the exact space Monica finds herself in in Hallmark’s new original film, Journey to You (And let me just say, it hits.)

Monica (played by Erin Cahill), is an ER nurse practitioner who prides herself on never taking a vacation (same, girl), and is lovingly nudged by her new boss and her mom to finally take a break.

But not just any break. We’re talking a literal pilgrimage across the Spanish countryside. She heads to walk the Camino de Santiago, carrying the final gift from her late father, a devotional filled with scripture and prompts, and slowly begins to uncover what her soul’s been craving all along: stillness, healing, purpose, and a deeper walk with God.

I won’t give away the whole story (you’ll have to tune in on Saturday, April 19th at 8pm/7pm CT on the Hallmark Channel for that), but I will say this; it had me thinking about the times in my own life when I’ve been so wrapped up in doing that I forgot how to just be (like pretty much every day for the last two years).

So with that in mind… let’s talk about what it means to slow down, reflect, and maybe even take our own version of a pilgrimage, whether it’s across the globe or right there in our living room, coffee in hand and slippers on feet.

Because sometimes the path to rediscovering our faith and purpose starts by putting one foot in front of the other… even if that looks more like a metaphorical walk than a passport stamp (although I gotta be honest, a passport stamp would just about hit the spot right now).

What I Learned About Letting Go (From a Movie and a Pilgrimage I’ve Never Walked)

Okay, confession time. (I feel like I’ve been doing this a lot, lately).

When I first read the plot line of the movie I rolled my eyes just a little. Mostly because I thought, okay. I’m listening. Trying to tell me something, God? I’m here.

Lately I’ve been stuck in this cycle of newly-entered-mid-life-what-ifs. I’ve been reflecting back on the times I’ve felt overlooked, under-appreciated, and feeling like I’m still watching everyone else’s life on a fast track while I’m stuck on the side of the road unsure what to do about a flat tire.

I’ve sat in the stillness of disappointment more than once, coffee in one hand, frustration in the other.

So when I heard about the Camino de Santiago, this ancient pilgrimage people have walked for centuries in search of healing, answers, peace, it hit just a little bit different.

It’s not just a beautiful trail through Spain. It’s a metaphor. For life. For surrender. For figuring out who you are when your plans don’t work out the way you hoped or thought they would.

But to draw those parallels I had to first do a little research to figure out what this movie was truly about and why it would prove to be so healing.

What Even Is the Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago (also referred to as “The Way of St. James”) is a pilgrimage that goes through Spain and ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It’s the spot where it’s believed the Apostle James is buried.

It’s a well-known path where people walk hundreds of miles (yes, on purpose) to pray, think, grieve, or find clarity in their life.

It’s the kind of journey that forces you to be still with your thoughts. Every step becomes a prayer. Every hill a metaphor for the climb we’ve been trudging through in our real lives.

Sometimes You Gotta Let Go To Find More

Watching Monica’s story unfold (and without spoiling anything), I found myself relating more than I expected. She didn’t set out to discover inner peace and spiritual renewal, she just wanted to stop feeling stuck. Sound familiar? It did to me.

It’s taken me years (40 to be exact) to come to the realization that sometimes God doesn’t fix our problems right away. Sometimes, even though this sounds harsh, it even feels like He might not be listening. But it’s not because He’s ignoring us, or because He doesn’t care. It’s because He’s trying to walk us through them.

I’m sure there’s a popular saying about how it’s never really about the destination, but who we become along the way. And I think sometimes that’s the big life lesson God is trying to teach us. But we become so self-absorbed and impatient that we often miss the point. It’s me. I’m “we.”

And that’s what this movie reminded me of.

Your Camino Might Not Look Like Spain

We’re not all booking plane tickets to Europe (although, don’t threaten me with a good time). But we all have our own version of the Camino. It’s that season of waiting. That new chapter you didn’t ask for. That prayer you’re still waiting to be answered.

And even when it feels like God forgot to pack the snacks or left you without a map, you have to remember that He didn’t.

He’s walking with you. Through it all. The highs. The heartbreaks. The unexpected detours. And yes, even the moments when you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.
