Bible Verses About Spiritual Growth: Becoming Who God Created You to Be
I used to think spiritual growth was some perfectly linear process. You read your Bible every day, pray before every meal, never miss church, and boom, you’re spiritually mature. Turns out, that’s not exactly how it works.
For me, spiritual growth has looked more like a winding road. Some seasons, I’m all in. Devouring scripture, feeling deeply connected to God, and walking in total confidence that He’s guiding my every step.
Other seasons? I’m struggling to pray, avoiding my Bible because I don’t want to face conviction, and wondering why I feel so distant from the very God I know is right beside me.
But what I’ve learned (the hard way, of course) is that spiritual growth isn’t about getting it right all the time. It’s about showing up, even when you don’t feel like it.
It’s about pressing into God in every season, trusting that He is working in you, shaping you, refining you, even when you can’t see it yet.
So, if you’ve ever wondered, “Am I even growing in my faith?” or felt stuck in a rut where nothing seems to be changing, you’re not alone.
Growth isn’t always visible right away, but I promise you, it’s happening. And one of the best ways to keep moving forward is by holding onto God’s truth.
Here are some of my favorite Bible verses about spiritual growth. Ones that remind me that God is always at work, stretching us, strengthening us, and leading us closer to Him.
Bible Verses About Spiritual Growth: Becoming Who God Created You to Be
Scriptures to Meditate on for Spiritual Growth
1. Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
If you’ve ever felt like you’re failing at this whole spiritual growth thing, this verse is for you. God is not finished with you yet. What He started in you? He will complete. No setbacks, no mistakes, no bad days can change that.
2. Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV)
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
Spiritual growth is about staying rooted in Jesus. Not just believing in Him, but actually walking with Him. Letting Him lead, trusting His process, and growing in gratitude along the way.
3. Hebrews 5:12-14 (CSB)
“Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.”
Oof. This one stings a little, doesn’t it? It’s a reminder that growth requires effort. We can’t stay on spiritual “milk” forever. We have to move beyond the basics, dig deeper, and step into spiritual maturity.
4. 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”
Growing in our faith isn’t about checking off religious to-do lists. It’s about knowing Jesus more. Learning about His grace, walking in it daily, and giving Him glory through the way we live.
5. James 1:2-4 (ESV)
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
If you’re going through a tough season, you are growing. I know it doesn’t always feel that way, but trust me, some of the biggest spiritual growth happens in the hardest moments.
6. John 15:5 (CSB)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.”
Want to grow? Stay connected to Jesus. It’s that simple (and yet, somehow, so easy to forget). The more we abide in Him, the more we see the fruit of that relationship in our lives.
7. 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 (NIV)
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”
Spiritual growth isn’t something we force, it’s something God does in us. Our job? Keep showing up. Keep seeking Him. Keep planting seeds of faith. He’ll take care of the growth.
If you’re in a season where you feel like you’re not growing, remember this: growth is often unseen. Just because you don’t feel it doesn’t mean God isn’t working.
Keep seeking Him. Keep leaning into His Word. Keep trusting the process. Because one day, you’ll look back and realize you’ve come so much further than you ever thought possible.
And when you do, I hope you remember this: It was never about you trying harder. It was always about God being faithful.
