Everyone Is Fighting a Battle You Can’t See, Be Kind Anyway
They usually look just like the rest of us.
They smile.
They put one foot in front of the other, living out their lives.
But if we could see inside of them, we’d be shocked.
Don’t be fooled by their smiles.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking they have a perfect life.
Sometimes perfection is the best cover-up for pain.
Imagine what they see when they look in the mirror, what they try to hide from even their own eyes.
We can’t look closely enough to see what they’ve hidden from us.
The truth is, they wish we could.
We need to be kind to everyone because we never know who they truly are.
If we could see, we would respond correctly every single time.
Our response would be a reaction to their pain, one born of love, one given with gentleness.
We would struggle to look at their smiling faces while unable to tear our eyes from their pain.
Instead, we see what they carefully create: the mask they slide over the truth, the truth of how they feel, the truth of what they have endured.
Every day we are around other people.
Every day we have a choice about how we respond to them.
Imagine if we knew the price they paid to simply get out of bed and carry on with their day as if they were just like us.
It costs us nothing to be kind to them.
To them, it might mean everything.
