Biblical Support: What It Means to Truly Show Up for Each Other
We often think of support as something we intentionally give, and it should be. But those intentions go beyond well-meaning words.
True support is revealed through consistent actions and a faithful presence.
In this article we’ll explore what true support really looks like.
What Biblical Support Really Looks Like (and why it’s the heart behind what matters most)
Support should be purposeful and more than kind words. It is a reflection of a Christ-like heart that shows up, stands firm, and walks alongside others faithfully.
So what does that mean and how can you tell when someone is truly showing up for you?
Exploring true support should demonstrate some distinct qualities and characteristics. As a believer, we must keep in mind that God calls us to live these specific qualities out.
First, let’s consider what true support should exemplify. These characteristics should include:
Showing up: When you show up for someone, you are ensuring that you are present, sincere in promises made, arrive on time, and that your presence is seen.
Standing firm: When you stand firm, you resist backing away or changing your position, especially if facing pressure from opposition. This reveals your ability to remain true, when you are willing to endure a difficult or challenging situation without breaking down or away from your commitment or support.
Walking alongside others faithfully: You decide that you will remain consistent and unwavering in your support.
Learning to listen well: You are not quick to pass judgement or bias, but you are willing to hear all the facts and use discernment in your commitments.
Remaining empathetic: Your emphasis must be to focus on how the other feels. Try to implement how you could possibly display relief, care, and awareness. Demonstrate an understanding of feelings and emotions.
Finding ways to assist: This is one of the most important; seek out ways in how you could come alongside in your support. This is demonstrated in sincerity and in how you can help.
Understanding these qualities of true support helps us to maintain them. And while there may be times when it’s difficult to do so, it’s vital to keep in mind the necessity to remain intentional in your actions.
There may be times that you may feel that your support does not matter or is not necessary. This does not mean that you stop showing up. Your presence may mean more than you realize.
Support may not mean you always have something to say. There may be moments that your quiet presence matters more.
We must understand you can be right next to someone in true support and never say anything. This quality comes because of attentiveness.
Another important point regarding true support is to keep in mind it may be necessary to set boundaries in this area.
There may come a time that you are very supportive and someone is taking advantage of you or taking you for granted. Perhaps they make you feel that only if this individual comes or gives a compliment then they feel valued. They may never let you know how much they appreciate your support.
It is in these moments you must remain discerning and proactive in protecting your peace and heart. You could be giving out to someone who is not deserving of such a commitment and God may be warning you so pay attention to red flags.
While showing up may be something you are good at, the question becomes is it something you always want to do?
When you are doing things more out of obligation, you may become disconnected to why you were demonstrating true support to the person in the first place.
Another aspect to demonstrating true support is not looking for rewards to your faithfulness in your commitments. Don’t look for a thank-you or for something to be given in return. Just give all your actions in a genuine matter.
Perhaps you are someone who needs support.
Maybe you want to see people come alongside you and demonstrate their care for you and just be there when needed.
There may come some moments when your communication is necessary to relay what you desire in your relationships and in faithful support, too. Some may not understand what it may mean to you.
Walking in true support is a decision we make.
It is good to evaluate where you are regarding these qualities of true support.
How can we do better in this area of support? I think it’s important that we take time in prayer about this and consider some examples in the Bible, too.
Here are a few Biblical references on the this topic of commitment and faithfulness in support. It will take being patient with one another, walking in the love of God, and continued prayers.
Be patient with one another
Ephesians 4:2 NIV encourages us, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
Romans 12:10 Amplified reminds us, “Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor.”
Love must be sincere
Romans 12:9 Amplified tells us, “Love is to be sincere and active [the real thing—without guile and hypocrisy]. Hate what is evil [detest all ungodliness, do not tolerate wickedness]; hold on tightly to what is good.”
Live a life of love
Ephesians 5:2 Amplified encourages us, “ …and walk continually in love [that is, value one another—practice empathy and compassion, unselfishly seeking the best for others], just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God [slain for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.”
Pray for one another
James 5:16 Amplified tells us, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) is able to accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].
Have you decided whether you are a faithful, committed person who demonstrates true support?
Are you someone who recognizes your need to receive it too?
Allow God to search your heart and make room for Him to do what He must to build you up in your commitments and where you may have to allow others to be there for you too.
Don’t make it an obligation but be purposeful in your genuine support.
